About data brokers
What is a data broker?
A company that collects personal information and sells or licenses it. Some run people-search websites where anyone can look you up. Others sell contact lists and profiles to marketers, recruiters and sales teams.
Where do they get my information?
Common sources are public records, websites and social media, apps, loyalty and marketing programmes, and other data companies. They often combine several sources into one profile.
Is this legal?
Rules differ between countries and many brokers are based overseas. Most brokers have a process for people to ask for their details to be removed, and that's the process we use for you.
What Redacted does
What exactly do you do for me?
With your written authority, we contact each broker on our list. We ask them to delete your details, stop selling or sharing them, and not add them back. Then we track each request on your dashboard. Brokers that accept email get a formal request straight away. For the others, our team completes the broker's own opt-out process.
Can you guarantee removal?
No. Each broker decides how it responds. Some act quickly, some ask for more proof, and some don't reply. We follow up and show you exactly where each one is up to.
How long does it take?
Requests go out when you run your first scan. Brokers usually take days to weeks to respond, and some take longer.
Will my details come back?
They can, because brokers keep collecting from new sources. While your plan is active we rescan automatically every 30 days, and you can run a scan yourself at any time. A broker that's still working on a request isn't emailed again.
What does "Needs you" mean on my dashboard?
The broker wants something only you can provide, such as confirming your identity. We'll tell you what's needed.
What can't you remove?
Official public registers, news reports, search-engine results for pages we don't control, and anything you've posted yourself, such as on social media.
Your privacy
Why do you need my details?
Brokers can only find and delete your record if we tell them who you are. We ask for your name (and any former names), email addresses, phone numbers and the places you've lived.
What do you send to brokers?
Only what they need to find your record, such as your name, email addresses, phone numbers and addresses. We never send your date of birth. Each request also asks the broker not to use the details for any other purpose.
How do you protect my information?
Personal details are encrypted before they're stored, with the encryption keys held on a separate key-management server. Access is restricted, and any staff access to your details is logged. You can see those log entries in your consent and audit log.
Where is my data stored?
On our servers in New Zealand. We use a small number of overseas providers for sign-in, payments and sending email. They're listed in our privacy policy.
Can I withdraw my consent or delete my account?
Yes, both from Settings in your account. Withdrawing consent stops all further requests. Deleting your account schedules your personal details for deletion.
Plans and billing
How much does it cost?
Individual $99, Family $299 (up to 5 people) and Business $499 (up to 20 people), in NZD per year, including GST. See pricing.
How do I pay?
By card through Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
How do I cancel?
From Settings → Manage billing. Your plan stops renewing.
Do you cover people outside New Zealand?
Our broker list covers brokers that serve New Zealand and Australia, so the service is designed for people living in either country.
Still have a question?
We're a small New Zealand team, and a real person reads every email.
